Facts About Hookworms In Dogs The appearance of the mouth parts differ according to species but generally it has been observed that hookworms have hook-like teeth that assist them to connect to the intestinal wall of the dog. They then feed on their blood and/or tissues. The peculiar thing about these worms is that they can easily detach themselves and move to a different spot while leaving little ulcers where they have fed inside the dog's body. These worms have the ability of causing severe anemia and serious diarrhea. How Do Dogs Get Hookworm? It is then coughed up and swallowed. Normally these worms attach themselves to the intestinal walls of the dog and feed on their blood from the tiny vessels of the wall thereby completing their life-cycle. Through Ingestion Larvae can be ingested through polluted sources in the environment or from other prey animals. Majority of the larvae that gets ingested generally gets passed down in the intestine, where it remains for a long time. There are certain larvae that migrate through the body and reach the trachea where it is coughed up and swallowed. Some of them will avert their migration during halfway and encyst in muscles. Through The Uterus Or Milk Larvae that encyst in the muscle can also migrate to the uterus of the pregnant doggy and infect her fetus.
